The story behind the Star Wars custom terno and barong at Star Wars Celebration Japan

The 501st Legion is a global Star Wars costuming organization dedicated to accurately recreating the franchise’s iconic “bad guy” characters—such as Darth Vader, stormtroopers, and Imperial officers—for charity events and other appearances. The group boasts around 14,000 members worldwide, many of whom own multiple costumes. The Rebel Legion is a sister organization dedicated to the same ideals, but with a focus on good guy characters, such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Ahsoka Tano.

Among both organizatios are numerous Filipino members, both in the Philippines and abroad. Many of these troopers are part of the Pinoy Trooper Network, a Facebook community that brings together members of Filipino descent. The network includes troopers from the United States, Canada, and, of course, the Philippines. Its mission is to unite all registered Filipino legion members under one Pinoy banner.

In preparation for Star Wars Celebration Japan, the Pinoy Trooper Network began working on a special project: custom barongs and ternos to proudly represent Filipino heritage on a global stage. The convention was just held in Chiba, Japan, a travel opportunity for international and Philippines-based members to gather in one place.

Dino Ignacio, a tech worker and digital artist based in Seattle, helped design the new logo of the Pinoy Trooper Network, which was used on both the outfits and challenge coins. The logo features the sun from the Philippine flag, with half of the Rebel Alliance and Imperial symbols at its center—symbolizing unity between the Rebel Legion and the 501st Legion under one Pinoy identity. The front of the outfits say “Pinoy Trooper Network” in aurebesh, one of the official languages of Star Wars. Pat M. Yulo, a teacher based in San Francisco, organized the production and distribution of 50 barongs and ternos. Bringing the designs to life took over a year of coordination with a modista in Manila and a dedicated group of friends committed to translating the concept into a truly Filipino creation.

At the official Bash—a party for Star Wars fan clubs at Star Wars Celebration—members of the Pinoy Trooper Network proudly wore their barongs and ternos. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees admiring the butterfly sleeves, which were unfamiliar to many but left a lasting impression.

The Pinoy Trooper Network was honored to gift a terno to Diana Lee Inosanto, who plays Morgan Elsbeth in Ahsoka. Her father, Dan Inosanto, was a student of Bruce Lee, who was also her godfather. Members of the group also presented a barong to Manny Jacinto, who portrays Qimir/The Stranger in The Acolyte. In a proud moment for the community, the Philippine Garrison officially inducted Manny Jacinto into the 501st Legion, recognizing his role in representing Filipinos on the global stage.
