Nintendo Switch 2: To buy or not to buy

That is the question every gamer has on their mind right now.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally official, and with its shiny new specs, updated Joy-Cons, and the promise of 4K gaming, it’s got the gaming world buzzing. But as someone who’s always seen the Switch as a bit of a niche console, I can’t help but ask: is it finally worth jumping into?

    The Niche Console No More?

The original Nintendo Switch was great if—and this is a big if—you were a die-hard Nintendo fan. The kind of person who breathes Mario Kart and sobs over every new Zelda trailer. For everyone else? It always felt a little… limited.

Personally, I was forced to buy a Switch because I wanted to play Fire Emblem: Three Houses. That game alone justified the purchase, but everything else? Meh. (Okay, okay, I also had Ring Fit, but we don’t talk about how quickly that fitness phase died. Lazy AF and proud.)

But with the Switch 2 officially supporting third-party games like Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and even Elden Ring, it’s no longer just a Nintendo-loyalist’s playground. That alone is going to shake things up big time.

    Powering Up (And Paying Up)

The original Switch launched at $299, while the Switch 2 hits shelves at $499. That’s a serious price jump, but honestly, it kind of makes sense. The performance leap is far and beyond—and this time, we’re not stuck with muddy textures and low-res visuals. I would constantly complain how graphics were so pixelated on Switch 1, but I had no choice since the game I wanted to play was only available on it. Now, at least, it can play 4K 60fps on docked mode. My eyes will be happy.

Oh, and heads up: unlike the original Switch, which was region-free, the Switch 2 introduces region-locking—especially for units sold in Japan. That means if you were planning to import a cheaper version or get early access through a different region’s release, you might be out of luck. Nintendo’s clamping down hard this time.

Accessories: What’s New in the Bag?

Nintendo is rolling out a suite of new accessories alongside the Switch 2, enhancing both functionality and user experience:

▪️Joy-Con 2 Controllers: These redesigned controllers feature magnetic attachment for a more secure connection and larger, more durable analog sticks. A notable addition is the “C” button, facilitating the new GameChat feature for voice communication. Priced at $89.99 per pair.

▪️Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip: Beyond serving as a traditional controller grip, this accessory charges your Joy-Con 2 controllers during gameplay. It also introduces customizable GL/GR buttons, allowing for personalized control mapping. Available for $34.99.

▪️Pro Controller 2: An evolution of the original Pro Controller, this version boasts enhanced ergonomics, improved battery life, and the inclusion of the “C” button for GameChat access. It’s priced at $79.99.

▪️Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: This dedicated USB-C camera enables video chat functionalities and integrates with certain games for an immersive experience. It connects seamlessly to the Switch 2’s USB-C port and is priced at $49.99.

▪️Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set: An upgraded dock supporting 4K output, featuring improved ventilation and a built-in Ethernet port for stable online gaming. The set includes the dock, AC adapter, USB-C cable, and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable, retailing at $109.99.

These accessories aim to enrich the Switch 2 gaming experience, offering enhanced control options, communication features, and improved connectivity.

Switch 1 vs Switch 2: What’s the difference?

Backwards CompatibilityYes, mostly compatibleYes, with minor exceptions
    Game Pricing$59.99 average$70–$90 average

    But Wait… $90 Games?!

Yes, the performance got better. But your wallet’s going to feel it. Some Switch 2 games are priced as high as $90. Ninety. Dollars. That’s wild. But again, it’s the price of admission for higher-quality titles. You get what you pay for, right?

Still, Nintendo fans will buy it even while complaining—because of that sweet, sweet exclusivity. Nintendo is notorious for locking their games to their platform and then keeping them there… forever. Whether you buy day one or six months later, chances are, you’ll eventually cave if there’s a Nintendo-exclusive with your name on it.

    What I’m Excited For

Personally, I can’t wait to see what they do with non-traditional games. You know, the stuff that makes Nintendo… Nintendo. Things like Ring Fit, Nintendo Sports, or whatever quirky Joy-Con motion-controlled experience they come up with next. The new Joy-Cons have been redesigned with better durability and magnetic snap-ons, so maybe my old Ring Fit gripes will finally be solved. (Still not promising I’ll exercise, though.)

    Press Start… or Not?

The Switch 2 might be more expensive, but it’s also more grown-up. It’s no longer just a Mario and Zelda machine—it’s a serious gaming device with the specs to back it up and an expanding catalog of games. It’s the Switch for people who want to play everything, not just Nintendo titles.

So, to buy or not to buy?
If you’re a Nintendo faithful, this is an easy “yes.”
If you’re a casual or picky gamer like me, it’s still a very tempting “yes”… just with a little more budgeting involved.

The Nintendo Switch 2 officially launches on June 5, 2025—at least in the US and Japan. For the Philippines and other regions, the release date might be a little later, so keep an eye out for local announcements if you’re planning to get one on day one.
