The work culture that makes lighter devices more practical now

When I was younger, I used to think a large laptop meant serious work. We carried chargers, accessories and other external drives that made our backpacks bulky.

However, as time passed, I see how productivity was changing alongside the way we work. Work no longer happens in just one place (What a time to be alive, indeed.) For me, it happens in airports, hotel lobbies, convention halls, and the trickiest place of them all—in the middle of the commute.

I carried this mindset while using the Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro for a few days. Somewhere between writing articles, I began to understand why Android tablet makers are once again chasing productivity.

    Carrying less

I’ve gradually become more dependent on lighter setups. Adding a heavy laptop to my mix of chargers, phones, and powerbanks can quickly become exhausting.

To be honest, modern work has evolved enough to make lighter setups practical. Much of what many of us do now happens online anyway. Workflows are no longer as dependent on carrying the most powerful machine possible at all times. Instead, practicality started mattering more. Devices like the XiaomiPad 8 Pro already checks many of the boxes expected from a premium Android tablet in 2026.

It runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite platform paired with an 11.2-inch 3.2K 144Hz display, up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, and a 9,200mAh battery with 67W HyperCharge support. It also ships with the Xiaomi Focus Keyboard locally, immediately positioning itself as more than just a media consumption device.

What stood out during my time with the device was thin and lightweight build made it easy to pull out. At 5.75mm thin and 485g, it’s significantly easier to carry around all day compared to most traditional laptops.

    The chase for productivity

Hybrid work, cloud-based platforms, and increasingly mobile lifestyles have made portability a much bigger priority than before. Many people no longer spend entire days tied to desks. Work now happens across multiple places throughout the day, and devices are expected to adapt to that movement.

The included Focus Keyboard changes how the device feels. It can change from behaving like a secondary entertainment screen and starts functioning more like a lightweight workstation. Xiaomi HyperOS 3 also leans heavily into multitasking with floating windows, split-screen layouts, and a PC-style browser experience complete with right-click functionality and mouse-hover previews.

For the kind of work many people do daily, that experience already feels capable enough. That doesn’t mean laptops are disappearing anytime soon but what we see happening is that there are still workloads better suited for traditional computers, especially for intensive editing or specialized software.

However, maximum power is no longer the only thing people optimize for. Sometimes, the productivity device you can rely on is simply the one you’re actually willing to carry everywhere.

    More practical than aspirational

What I appreciated most about the Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro was that it didn’t feel like a device trying too hard to replace a laptop completely. Instead, it felt more realistic about what modern work looks like today.

Most people are not editing feature films in cafés every day. Many are simply trying to stay productive and flexible while constantly moving between places. That’s exactly where tablets like this begin to shine.

The Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro feels less like an “alternative computer” and more like a device designed around modern work today. More mobile, and increasingly untethered from traditional desks.

After relying on it for a few days, I know now that tablets didn’t suddenly changed overnight, but because the way we work already has.
