Fortnite returning to Google Play after years-long dispute with Epic Games

Fortnite is set to officially return to the Google Play Store on March 19, marking the end of a years-long standoff between Epic Games and Google over app store policies and fees.

The confirmed date has fueled online buzz, with a circulating post on X (formerly Twitter) capturing user reactions to the game’s comeback on Android’s primary app marketplace.

“Epic Games Store continues supporting Android worldwide alongside Windows and Mac, and installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026,” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney wrote on X.

For many players, the return signals a full-circle moment after Fortnite was pulled from Google Play in 2020.

The removal came after Epic Games introduced its own in-app payment system, bypassing Google’s billing service and avoiding commissions of up to 30 percent.  Google responded by taking down the game, prompting Epic to file an antitrust lawsuit accusing the company of monopolistic practices in Android app distribution and payments.

In 2023, a US jury ruled in favor of Epic Games, finding that Google had maintained an illegal monopoly. The case eventually led to a 2025 settlement, pushing Google to overhaul key Play Store policies.

Among the changes were the allowance of alternative billing systems and reduced service fees, concessions that cleared the way for Fortnite’s reinstatement on the platform.

“Google is opening up Android all the way with robust support for competing stores, competing payments, and a better deal for all developers. So, we’ve settled all of our disputes worldwide. THANKS GOOGLE!” said Sweeney.

While Fortnite remained playable on Android through sideloading and third-party app stores during the dispute, its absence from Google Play limited accessibility for many users.
