Google has rolled out a native Mac application for its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, bringing Gemini directly to desktop users.

The app allows users to access Gemini through a floating interface that can be launched via a keyboard shortcut. Once opened, the assistant stays on top of other applications, enabling users to ask questions, generate content and perform tasks without switching between tabs.

A feature of the Mac version is its ability to analyze on-screen content with user permission. This allows Gemini to provide answers or summaries based on what is currently displayed, removing the need to manually copy text or upload files.

The app also supports file uploads, including documents and images, and allows users to revisit previous conversations linked to their Google accounts.

Its main capabilities mirror those available on Gemini’s web and mobile versions, including writing assistance, research support and content generation.

Google said the application is available on newer versions of macOS in regions where Gemini services are supported.

Prior to the Mac release, Gemini was mainly offered as a web-based tool, allowing Google to reach users quickly without developing platform-specific applications.

The company has also historically focused on deeper integration within its own ecosystem, particularly on Android devices, while desktop environments such as macOS have played a more limited role in its AI rollout.
