Hold on to your beloved PS4s, as spring 2026 may mark the beginning of the end for the console, as game developers start to withdraw support for their games on the platform next year.
Last August, ‘Genshin Impact’ developers miHoYo announced the complete discontinuation of their support of the game next year, following the removal of the game from PlayStation Store last November.
miHoYo stated in their formal announcement that they will begin to remove in-game purchases for Genshin Impact on February 25, 2025. The Chinese game developers will also terminate their support for the game on April 8, 2026.
Along with miHoYo, ‘THE FINALS’ developers Embark Studios formally announced on X that they will remove the game from PS4 shelves on March 18, 2026, to continue support on current-generation hardware, primarily the PS5.
PUBG Studios has already terminated support for their popular battle royale game PUBG, stating in an announcement that this move was to “ensure a smoother, more seamless experience with future updates, we’ve decided to transition to current-gen consoles.”
“It weighs heavily on us to deliver this news to our console players who have enjoyed PUBG on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for so many years,” the developers added.
An insider report also indicated that six key services will cease to exist on the PS4, primarily including their Activity Feed Web API, Shared Media Web API, Title Small Storage, Title User Storage, Word Filters, as well as Users and Profiles. However, existing games on the PS4 will retain access to these services.
The removal of these APIs limits the developers’ access to the console as basic web services, such as user profiles and title storage, heavily discourage developers from releasing new games on the PS4.
As of December 2025, the latest AAA game released on the PS4 was Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Newly released games on the PS4 also include Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Little Nightmares III, and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
