Spotify to tell users which artists are AI

Spotify will begin labeling some AI-generated artist identities on its platform in mid-September, giving listeners a way to know whether the person behind an artist profile is real or created using artificial intelligence (AI).

The new AI Persona badge will appear on artist profiles, in Search, and on track listings across playlists.

“Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” Spotify said in a blog post.

Artists can voluntarily identify their profiles as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists starting Aug. 12. But Spotify will not rely only on self-disclosure. The company will also review artist profiles and identify those whose public identity, including their name and images, appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated person.

Spotify said it will first check AI-generated artist profiles that have a larger audience, so the labels will cover most of the artists that Spotify users regularly visit.

When the badges appear in September, listeners will be able to tap them to see whether the artist disclosed the AI identity themselves or whether Spotify determined it through its own review.

Artists whose profiles are flagged by Spotify will be notified and given an opportunity to disclose that they are AI Personas or appeal the decision.

Spotify will also limit how AI Personas appear in recommendations. By default, their music will not appear in personalized editorial or algorithmic recommendations unless a listener already follows the artist, for example.

The company stressed that the badge is about the artist’s identity, not how the music was created.

“Although there’s a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination,” Spotify said.

Other tools introduced in 2026 include Verified by Spotify, which identifies real artists; AI Credits, which let musicians disclose how they used AI to make a song; and SongDNA, which provides more information about the artists and contributors behind a track.

Spotify said tens of thousands of AI credits are submitted daily, indicating growing interest in transparency around AI-generated music.
