Google is rolling out a major upgrade to Search, adding new features that bring artificial intelligence (AI) deeper into everyday queries and interactions.
At the annual Google I/O event, the company explained that its AI Mode has already grown fast, now serving over 1 billion monthly users. Searches are also happening more often than ever, with query volume more than doubling every quarter since its launch last year.
Here’s what’s new in Search’s AI Mode:
- Powerful AI, right in Search
Google is upgrading Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash, its newest AI model. It’s now the default in AI Mode worldwide. The goal is simple: faster and smarter answers, especially for more complex questions or tasks. - A Search box that understands more
The Search box is getting its biggest redesign in over 25 years. Instead of just typing short keywords, you can now write longer, more detailed questions. The box also expands as you type, giving you more space to explain what you’re looking for. It can also suggest better ways to phrase your question and allows you to search using images, files, videos, or even open Chrome tabs. - Easier follow-up questions
Search is becoming more like a conversation. You can now ask follow-up questions directly inside AI answers instead of starting over. Google also keeps the context of your previous questions, so results stay connected as you dig deeper into a topic. - AI agents that watch things for you
One of the biggest changes is “Search agents.” These are AI tools that can keep track of information in the background and alert you when something important changes.
For example, you can set it to watch apartment listings that match your budget and preferences. Or get notified when your favorite athlete announces a sneaker collaboration.
“Information agents will intelligently look across everything on the web, like blogs, news sites and social posts, plus our freshest data, such as real-time info on finance, shopping and sports, to monitor for changes related to your specific question,” Google said in the media release.
- Help with bookings and real-world tasks
Search is also getting better at handling real-life requests. You can now describe what you need, like finding a karaoke room for a group or booking a service nearby, and Google will pull together options, prices, and availability.
In some cases, it can even contact businesses for you. These features will start rolling out in the United States first.
- More personalized results, but still your choice
Google is also expanding personalization in AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages. You can connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos if you want more tailored results, with Google Calendar support coming soon.
