Everything you missed at Evo Japan 2026

Every year, countless fighting game tournaments make their rounds all around the world, but if you are in any way a fan of this pillar of the video game genre, you know that Evolution (Evo) is the one place to seek glory.

Founded in 1996, Evo is where legends are born, bred, and honored. It has since expanded from its Vegas origins to regions such as Europe and Asia. One such tournament, Evo Japan, just wrapped its seventh incarnation last Sunday, May 3 at the Tokyo Big Sight.

From Filipino representation to world records and hype announcements, here are key moments you may have missed during the biggest tournament in the East.

Philippines’ AK ends his Tekken 8 run in 4th place

AK (right) shakes hands with South Korea’s Knee (left) after their fierce close battle at the EVO Japan Tekken 8 semi-finals stage

Philippines’ Tekken 8 representative Alexandre “AK” Laverez ended his EVO Japan run in 4th place, after an intense battle with South Korea’s Bae “Knee” Jae-min on the Losers’ Semi Finals led to a heart-pounding tie-breaker — with Knee’s Bryan just beating out AK’s Shaheen in the last seconds of the final round.

AK, already a long standing Tekken competitor, first joined Evo Japan in 2019, making an explosive first impression smashing through competition and achieving 2nd place of the Tekken 7 championship. This year’s run marks the 2nd time he reached the Top 8 bracket at the tournament, and the first in the latest Tekken game.

Knee eventually gave in to fellow South Korean representative Kim “iKARi” Min-kyu for the title of championship, where iKARi humorously bit his trophy and bowed down to the ground in front of the runner-up.

Street Fighter 6 broke tournament participant records

Guinness Book of World Records entered the stage right before Street Fighter 6 Top 8 to make a big announcement: with 7,168 competitors, Street Fighter 6 officially became the largest tournament for a single fighting videogame.

This is the second time the Evolution franchise held a world record, with the last certificate given to Evo Vegas in 2024 for the largest fighting game tournament, amassing a whopping 10,224 participants total.

In order from left to right: Evo General Manager Rick Thiher, Head of Tournament Yasuaki Matsuda, Tournament Director Hiroaki Inaba and Street Fighter 6 Tournament Manager Fusuke Toyota received the Guiness Book of World Records certificate.

With the largest pool came its biggest winner: Japan’s Eisuke Yamaguchi came on top after defeating USA’s Victor “Punk” Woodley, 3-1, making Yamaguchi the first player to qualify for the 13th official tournament season for Street Fighter 6, Capcom Pro Tour 2026.

Riot’s 2XKO makes its world stage debut

Riot Games finally released their long-awaited first foray into the world of fighting games with 2XKO in January, debuting the game at Evo Japan’s main stage. Based on the world and characters of League of Legends, 2XKO’s unique mechanic is the Duo Play System, allowing two players to play on the same team, at the same time. There was, however, no official duo bracket in the tournament.

USA’s Hikari dominated the competition, using the characters Akali and Ahri to sweep all opponents. Hikari is a known veteran in the community, winning the Evo Japan 2023 Dragon Ball Fighters Z tournament, as well as the 2XKO tournament at LVL UP EXPO 2026.

Legacy fighting games get their chance at the spotlight

Classic fighting games Vampire Savior: Lord of the Vampire and Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) both made their main stage debuts this year. Previously only relegated to side tournaments, these two old favorites were added to add a retro flair and honor the long-standing legacy of the fighting game genre.

Vampire Savior, developed by Capcom at the height of their 90s arcade domination, lets you play as different horror-themed characters, such as the vampire Demitri Maximoff, the mummy Anarkis, and the iconic succubus Morrigan Aensland.

In an almost reflection of the deep history of the community, Japan’s Kaji came out of retirement specifically for this tournament, and came out as champion.

Hokuto no Ken, also known worldwide as Fist of the North Star, is a fighting game developed by Guilty Gear’sArc System Work based on the iconic and highly influential anime of the same name.

Japan’s K.I. is Evo Japan’s king of the hill, a veteran of the title that never lost a single game; maintaining his winner’s bracket run with his roster until the very end.

    Character reveals and announcements

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls —Fighting Avengers

Arc System Works of Guilty Gear fame revealed team Fighting Avengers for the upcoming 4v4 Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls game, consisting of Captain America, Iron Man, Shuri as Black Panther, and Hulk. The trailer also confirmed the release date of Aug. 6, 2026.

Fatal Fury: City of Wolves — Mr. Karate

SNK mainstay Mr. Karate joins the roster of Fatal Fury: City of Wolves as the finals’ Season 2 DLC character, out May 2026. Lore-wise, the mantle of Mr. Karate is held by the Sakazaki family, this announcement also surprised fans by revealing that this version of the character is also another SNK mainstay and fan-favorite Robert Garcia.

    TEKKEN 8 — Kunimitsu

Bandai Namco revealed returning Tekken character Kunimitsu’s gameplay during the Tekken 8 awarding ceremony. She was announced as a DLC character in February 2026 and is set to release late spring this year.

Other legacy characters such as Bob and Roger Jr. will also be released throughout this year, with a fourth character to be revealed at Combo Break 2026 this May.

Fighting games fans around the world have so much more in store for 2026. Evo in Vegas is coming up this June, and with all the hype and changes, everyone’s gonna be busy muscling up in a race to put their names in the hall of fame.
