Google is enhancing Google Maps using Google Gemini to add immersive navigation and conversational search.Beyond the existing 3D view, users can now ask Maps for directions, route details, and recommendations for nearby places.

The Gemini models analyze real-world imagery from Google Street View and aerial photos in Google’s database. This allows Maps to better understand routes by recognizing details such as streets, buildings, and crosswalks.

A feature called Ask Maps enables users to ask questions about where to go. People can search for places such as specialty restaurants or find a workspace for quick tasks without manually looking up nearby locations.

Google said Maps analyzes information from more than 300 million places, including reviews from its community of over 500 million contributors.

For drivers, Immersive Navigation introduces redesigned visuals and more intuitive guidance. Google said the system provides real-world context and more natural directions while navigating.

The update also recommends the best routes and provides a broader preview of the journey through voice guidance. Users can view the destination ahead of arrival, including nearby parking, turns, and side streets.

Maps can also surface real-time disruptions using crowd-sourced updates from its community of users.

Immersive Navigation begins rolling out across the United States starting today. Google said availability will expand in the coming months to eligible iOS and Android devices, as well as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in.
