Meta Platforms is reportedly reviving its long-shelved smartwatch project, this time positioning it as an AI-first wearable targeted for 2026 launch, according to The Information cited by Reuters.

The device, internally called “Malibu 2,” is expected to combine health and fitness tracking with a built-in Meta AI assistant.

The company previously scrapped its original smartwatch plans in 2022 amid broader cost-cutting within its Reality Labs division.

Meta’s earlier smartwatch concept reportedly included ambitious features such as dual cameras and a detachable display. This version never reached the market as the company shifted focus to its metaverse and augmented reality products.

This time around, the strategy appears more focused with artificial intelligence at the center of the experience.

Meta has yet to confirm specifications, pricing or a firm launch date for the smartwatch and declined to comment on the report, according to Reuters.

The smartwatch, if launched, would expand Meta’s growing wearable ecosystem, which includes its AI-enabled Ray-Ban smart glasses developed with EssilorLuxottica.

The potential return also places Meta back in competition with established smartwatch players such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics, both of which continue to expand AI features in their wearables.
