Gift-giving in the age of digital Valentines

After the fireworks of January, February sweeps in draped in red and hearts, heralding Valentine’s Day. As a Gen Xer, I can’t help but say, “Back in my day…”—because Valentine’s Day was quite the spectacle.

The usual haunts of young women would suddenly be filled with young men, nervously lining up to buy gifts. It all began with a bit of detective work—asking around, consulting family and friends to find out what their crush liked. Flowers? Chocolates? Stuffed toys? A handwritten card? With allowances carefully saved, these boys would scour local flower shops, sometimes even braving the famous Dangwa district for the best floral deals. Candy stores, malls, and specialty shops like Gift Gate and Blue Magic became their hunting grounds, all in pursuit of the perfect gift.

Then came the big moment. On Valentine’s Day, our school would be buzzing with boys bearing gifts, each strategizing how to deliver them. Some marched straight up to their crush with confidence, while others relied on friends for backup. The shy ones? They left their presents on desks with an anonymous note—often signed, “From your secret admirer.” And just like that, you’d see them beaming with pride. The gift itself was secondary; it was the effort, sincerity, and time invested that made all the difference. Those were the days of kilig moments and hard-earned pogi points.

Fast forward to today. With just a few swipes and clicks, anyone can order a gift online and have it delivered anywhere in the world. It’s incredibly convenient and offers endless options. But does that make the gesture any less meaningful? At first glance, it might seem so—but online gift-giving comes with its own set of challenges. Scrolling through countless websites, verifying legit sellers, comparing prices and designs, managing expectations vs. reality, and ensuring safe delivery—it takes just as much thought and effort to pick the perfect gift. And let’s be real, the anxiety doesn’t end until the package safely reaches its destination.

That said, the digital world has also redefined what a “gift” can be. While physical presents feel more personal—after all, there’s something special about holding a handwritten letter or smelling fresh flowers—digital gifts have carved their own space, especially for the tech-savvy and practical-minded. For gamers, a Steam gift card can mean hours of entertainment. Music lovers appreciate a Spotify Premium upgrade, and for those running out of cloud storage (yes, they exist!) find value in a Google One subscription. And let’s not forget those who’d love nothing more than unlimited access to AI-powered productivity with a ChatGPT subscription. In many ways, digital gifts are just as thoughtful because they cater to a person’s daily interests and needs—something they’ll actually use and appreciate. The key difference is that while physical gifts evoke nostalgia and tangible sentimentality, digital gifts offer immediate utility and accessibility.

This Valentine’s Day, I’ll be watching my dad and brother wake up early to visit the flower shop, while my son carefully selects his gifts online. Two different approaches, but both equally heartfelt. Because at the end of the day, it’s never about how the gift was bought—it’s about the love behind it.
