There’s something honest about firsts, like the first time you use a new brand or the first time you hold a device that carries a legacy name.
It’s an encounter where you don’t have years of loyalty shaping your judgment. You just have instinct.
The Xiaomi 17 was that kind of first for me; my first experience with a Leica-engineered smartphone camera. I approached it without expectations, which is perhaps the fairest way to meet a flagship that positions itself as uncompromising.
Maybe that’s why what happened next felt significant. Somewhere between the first frame I shot and the first full day I used it for work, it eased its way from feeling like a trial device to feeling like a serious creative tool.
At 6.3 inches, it sits in that increasingly rare category of compact flagships. The matte glass back diffuses fingerprints and gives the device a muted, premium texture. The aluminum frame feels rigid, while the camera module is prominent.

Up from the ultra-thin bezels frame a CrystalREs OLED display that peaks at 3,500 nits of brightness. Outdoors, that spec becomes practical, most especially under direct sunlight.
It’s also IP68-rated, meaning it’s built for everyday unpredictability.
Under the hood, the Xiaomi 17 runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform built on a 3nm process, and paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage.
In everyday use, that hardware translates into a phone that feels consistently responsive. Switching between apps is smooth, while moving between camera modes or reviewing photos happens without noticeable delay. Even during heavier tasks such as recording high-resolution video or juggling several apps at once, the device maintains its pace.
Battery life is supported by a 6,330mAh Xiaomi Surge battery, which is generous for a device in this size category.
The Xiaomi 17 also supports 100W wired HyperCharge and 50W wireless charging, allowing the device to refill quickly when paired with a compatible charger.
One small thing to note, however, is that the review unit did not come with a charger head in the box. While the phone supports extremely fast charging, users will need a compatible charger to fully take advantage of those speeds.
During extended camera use, particularly when shooting multiple photos in succession or attempting high-zoom shots, the device did warm slightly around the camera module area.
Where Leica comes in
The Xiaomi 17 is built around what the company calls “Essential Leica Imagery,” centered on a Leica Summilux optical lens paired with the Light Fusion 950 image sensor. The system is designed to capture more light while preserving detail across highlights and shadows.
In practice, the results often lean toward restraint over exaggeration.

In a late afternoon shot of tiled flooring and wooden furniture, the camera handled directional sunlight with control. The highlights from the sun remained bright without blowing, while the darker areas under the bench retained detail instead of collapsing into deep shadow. The overall image preserved the warmth of the scene without looking artificially enhanced.

One particularly demanding test came during the blood moon that occurred earlier last week. Capturing the moon is difficult for most smartphones because of the small subject side and intense brightness against a dark sky. While trying to frame the shot using Zoom, the Xiaomi 17 was able to capture the reddish tint of the moon during the eclipse.

It also served as a reminder of how demanding such scenes can be for a compact camera system, as the device warmed slightly during extended attempts to get the shot.
Final thoughts
For a first time experience with both Xiaomi and a Leica-branded smartphone camera, the Xiaomi 17 left a strong impression.
Rather than relying on exaggerated processing or flashy camera tricks, the device focuses on balance. Colors remain natural, highlights stay controlled and the overall look of images feels closer to what the scene actually looked like.
Combined with its compact flagship design and performance, the Xiaomi 17 is a capable device for people who want a premium smartphone that also takes photography seriously.
And for a first encounter, that impression is surely difficult to ignore.
