Google is introducing Googlebook, a new laptop category named as the successor to Chromebook, a shift from cloud-first computing to what the company calls an intelligence-first experience powered by Gemini.
The unveiling builds on the Chromebook foundation launched more than 15 years ago, but reframes the laptop around AI-driven assistance rather than a traditional operating system experience. Googlebook combines the Chrome browser, Google Play apps, and a modern OS layer designed to work closely with Gemini across everyday tasks.
Among its features is the Magic Pointer, a redesigned cursor system built with Google DeepMind. Instead of only navigating the screen, the cursor becomes an interaction point for actions and suggestions. Users can hover over content to trigger context-aware functions, such as turning email dates into calendar events or comparing visual items directly on-screen.
Googlebook also introduces Create your Widget, a feature that allows users to generate desktop widgets using prompts. These widgets can pull information from services like Gmail and Calendar to build personalized dashboards, such as travel planning hubs or event summaries.
The platform is also designed to work closely with Android phones. Users can open mobile apps directly on the laptop without emulation, allowing actions like placing orders or completing app-based tasks while working on a desktop. A Quick Access system also allows users to access phone files directly from the laptop file browser.
Google is developing Googlebook with hardware partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Devices will feature a premium design language and a distinctive glowbar element to identify the new category.
Google said Googlebook will roll out in multiple laptop formats starting this fall.
