The spookiest games to play on PC Game Pass

As Spooktober culminates into the creepy eve of Halloween, the time has come to treat yourself. But instead of giving into the parasites that want the candy or doing something lame like tell ghost stories over wine and snacks, play some scary ass videogames on PC Game Pass.

Filipinos who sign up for PC Game Pass for the low monthly price of PHP 175 get access to the best subscription service in gaming. It is also a good time to subscribe because on October 26 the highly anticipated Call of Duty Black Ops 6 will launch on PC Game Pass. But even without hot new releases, there hundreds of games to play.

Whether you have the friends over at your place, or gather on your private Discord server or decide to have a chill stream, being on PC Game Pass means there’s always something to check out. Here are my recommendations for some of the best horror titles on PC Game Pass.

#1 — The complete Clementine saga of The Walking Dead

While the AMC series The Walking Dead descended into ignominy over the course of eleven seasons, this narrative-driven series from Telltale Games holds up better. The Walking Dead introduces players to Clementine, a driven young girl forced to grow up in a zombie apocalypse. Of the five seasons, three focus exclusively on Clem and are available on Game Pass.

#2 — Dead by Daylight

This asymmetrical multiplayer game pits one player against four. One player is the Killer, looking to sacrifice the rest to a dark entity. Dead by Daylight captures the essence of the slasher movie and as an additional treat, features dozens of characters licensed from various horror and thriller franchises like Halloween and Chainsaw Massacre. The game recently added the likes of Chucky, the Xenomorph and even Nicolas Cage as himself. Dead by Daylight is a Game Pass must-play.

#3 — Dead Space (2023)

A remake of the 2008 smash hit, 2023’s Dead Space combines gruesome combat with tense exploration. As engineer Isaac Clarke, players must investigate the USG Ishimura, a derelict mining station that has fallen into disaster and chaos. It’s all thanks to the necromorphs, undead corpses that mutate into varying forms and possessed of murderous instincts. If you liked Event Horizon or Alien, you’ll appreciate the shattered corridors, monstrous terrors and pure space chaos of Dead Space.

#4 — Inscryption

Despite its eerie aesthetic, this rogue-like deckbuilding adventure looks like just about any other card-based videogame cluttering the indie sections of every videogame storefront. But Inscryption is special, it draws upon occult vibes, psychological horror and the sinister vibes of puzzles to tell a unique story about sacrifice, art and more. Opinions vary on the game’s pacing, but Inscryption ultimately rewards those intrigued to learn more about its mysteries.

#5 — Prey

One of the biggest commercial flops in the history of Arkane Studios is also one of the best horror games ever. Set in space aboard Talos-1, a luxurious research and design facility, Prey casts you as station director Morgan Yu, who needs to know why they’ve been the subject of experiments. The catch? Nearly everyone is dead, attacked by dark alien swarms known as the Typhon. It’ll take wits and resolve to learn the truth and survive long enough to do something about it.

#6 — Resident Evil 2 & 3

A bit of a cheat here to name two games, but they’re two great tastes that go together. As remakes of two of the most beloved installments in the legendary franchise, these games see you fighting for your life to survive the horrors of one night in Raccoon City. Play as rookie cop Leon Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield in 2019’s Resident Evil 2 or special tactics operative Jill Valentine in 2020’s Resident Evil 3. Count your shots because the monsters are endless and the night is long.
