    Neopets is still alive!

Neopets holds a special place in the hearts of many who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s.

For those who remember the excitement of logging in on a dial-up connection, there’s a comforting sense of nostalgia knowing that the site is still around. The simple joys of caring for our virtual pets, playing games that ran smoothly even on a 5Mbps connection, and exploring the whimsical world of Neopia can still be experienced today. For us 90s kids, logging back into Neopets is like stepping into a time capsule, allowing us to relive the carefree moments of our childhood.

Today, Neopets is still active, though under different leadership. On July 17, 2023, it was announced that Neopets had been purchased from NetDragon through a management buyout led by Neopets Chief Metaverse Officer Dominic Law, reviving the platform under new guidance.

The core gameplay of Neopets revolves around adopting and caring for virtual pets, each with unique species, colors, and personalities. Players can feed their pets, play with them, and train them in the Battledome, a turn-based combat arena where Neopets can battle against other players’ pets or NPCs. Pet customization is a significant aspect of the game, allowing players to dress up their Neopets with various outfits, accessories, and even paint brushes that change their color and appearance.

Neopia itself is a vast world with numerous regions to explore, each offering different activities, shops, and games. We can visit Faerieland, a floating city in the clouds; the Lost Desert, full of ancient mysteries; or the Haunted Woods, with its spooky atmosphere. These regions are home to countless mini-games, from puzzles and action games to word games and strategy games. Completing these games earns Neopoints, the in-game currency that can be spent on items, food, toys, and more.

An essential part of the Neopets experience is the variety of daily activities that players can engage in. These include spinning the Wheel of Excitement for a chance at prizes, collecting free omelets from the Giant Omelette in Tyrannia, and trying their luck at the Tombola. These daily tasks are quick, offer rewards, and add a routine element to the game, encouraging players to return daily.

The site also has rich lore and community-driven events, including site-wide plots, where we can work together to solve puzzles and battle enemies, and the Neopian economy, where we can invest in the Neopian Stock Market and run our shops. Neopets even has a robust marketplace and auction system where we can buy, sell, and trade rare items.

Though it has undergone many changes since its peak, the site faced challenges, particularly with the decline of Adobe Flash, which powered most of its games and interactive features. Since Flash was discontinued in 2020, Neopets has started to work on converting its games and features to HTML5, actively updating the platform and rebuilding our beloved Flash games to make them playable again.

As a kid, I didn’t pay much attention to the intricate details of Neopets—I was more focused on keeping my pets healthy and well-fed. Customization back then wasn’t as advanced as it is now, with fewer choices for backgrounds, foregrounds, and closets.

What made Neopets special to me was that it was a game I could enjoy on an old computer with a dial-up connection. It also provided a way to connect with friends online and have something to talk about at school. Beyond that, Neopets likely sparked my interest in gaming and paved the way for my love of the hobby.

That’s why it made me curious when a friend recently invited me to log back into my old Neopets account and to make the experience even more special, she gave me an official Neopets merch—a cute Acara NeoHood. It was a delightful reminder of the fun we used to have on the platform, making revisiting Neopia all the more special.

The update doesn’t just feature the revived Neopets website; it also includes more payment-friendly options, new Neopets merchandise, and expanded pet customization choices at Neomall. I can now relive my childhood – but with adult money!

One of the recent additions to Neopets is the Neopass, a centralized feature that allows us to connect and manage all our Neopets accounts with ease. As a player who created numerous accounts back in the day, this was helpful in unifying two of my old accounts, though the rest have faded from memory. Revisiting these accounts, I couldn’t help but notice the difference in my naming choices from 20 years ago, reflecting how much I’ve grown since then.

With Neopets active again, it’s the perfect time to share the game with the new generation. See how their gameplay and pet names differ from ours, and create a shared experience.
