How ChatGPT influences my purchase decisions — from makeup to food

“ChatGPT, what are some good lipstick brands that last long?”

I was at one of the more upscale malls in the metro, walking towards a high-end makeup store, when I thought about consulting ChatGPT about my choice of lipstick. For years, I settled with drugstore and department store lipsticks that faded quickly, and I finally wanted to buy something that lasts. Maybe there were brands better than the one I had in mind.

I knew that searching on Google would lead me to an advertisement, an article peppered with SEO keywords, or a review from a random woman who does not share my skin tone, complexion, and vibe. With ChatGPT, I could at least get answers specifically for me.

A no-fuss, practical guide to making AI your all-in-one travel tool

I asked for options, and ChatGPT listed a range of makeup brands. One stood out for me. Why didn’t I think of that! I thought, seeing that the brand was reputable enough and less expensive than my original choice. I also knew there was a store somewhere at that mall. So I followed up with, What nude shade would suit me as someone who is fair but has a warm skin tone? Perfect for everyday.

ChatGPT gave me names of specific shades, and I chose the brownish one. Phone in hand, I went the other way suddenly, steered away from Brand A and towards Brand B.

Minutes later, I walked out of that shop with a shade that would end up becoming my holy grail. I loved what ChatGPT had recommended. Years of finding the perfect nude lipstick finally ended, all thanks to a five-minute conversation with ChatGPT. Eventually, I turned into a loyal customer of the brand and bought other makeup products there—when once upon a time, I didn’t give it much thought.

That is only one of the examples of how I use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to buy things. I would be at the grocery store, looking for ingredients for something I would be cooking for the first time. All I had to do was ask ChatGPT to whip up a list for me, and I would know what to get without having to read lengthy instructions on WikiHow or open YouTube. Torn between two cleansers? ChatGPT, which is a better cleanser for my skin type? ‘If you’re targeting to remove acne, Brand A may be better…’

What meal has more protein? I am turning 28 and want to get rid of the Gen Z style. Where should I buy more age-appropriate and sophisticated clothes? (Alright, add to cart!) What stocks should I invest in? Whenever I asked, ChatGPT would give me pros and cons.

The beauty of AI is that I could present a problem, compare specific brands, or even voice out my hesitations—in a snap of a finger, I would have answers that I would not be able to find on a forum or promotional website.

Of course, I know that information on ChatGPT—or any AI platform, for that matter— is merely drawn from the Internet. I also know that I must be discerning because AI can make and has made mistakes. It doesn’t know all the brands out there, and I could be missing out on less known products by relying on ChatGPT for answers. There could also be privacy risks down the line when tech giants and marketers use AI to study people’s purchasing behavior, and I don’t overshare when it comes to sensitive information such as medical history.

Still, I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. I am happy with everything I bought with the help of AI. AI has helped me cut through the noise and beyond online advertisements that scream Buy me! Buy Me! As a Gen Z, I find that asking ChatGPT is the more authentic choice, which is something our generation values above all.

I expect companies to pour more of their energy in promoting their brands through ChatGPT and other AI tools soon. Some marketers are already doing it, through a combination of Answer Engine Optimization, a strong social media presence, and strategic placements in reputable sources. It is fascinating to see how AI will take on a different turn over time the way social media platforms have become marketing powerhouses through the years.

As for me? You can find me in the mall, on the grocery aisles, or online stores, asking ChatGPT what to buy.
