Meta’s new Muse Image feature raises privacy questions

Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new artificial intelligence (AI) image-generation model that expands the company’s creative AI tools across its platforms while giving users new ways to generate and edit images using text prompts and existing photos.

Developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, Muse Image allows users to create images from text prompts, edit photos through sketches and annotations, and combine multiple reference images into a single composition.

The feature is now available through the Meta AI app and powers new AI experiences on Instagram Stories and WhatsApp in select countries. Meta said Muse Image will also be integrated into Facebook, Messenger and its advertising tools in the coming weeks.

Among its new capabilities is the ability to reference public Instagram accounts in prompts. By mentioning an adult public account, users can generate AI images inspired by publicly shared photos from that profile.

Meta said the feature does not apply to private accounts or users under 18. Images created with Muse Image also include an embedded “Content Seal” watermark to identify them as AI-generated.

    Users push back

The rollout has also triggered criticism from users, who questioned why public Instagram accounts are automatically included in the feature.

One post on X described the feature as “extremely dangerous” and “disturbing,” reflecting concerns that AI could repurpose publicly available images without users fully understanding how the tool works.

Another post that gained traction described the feature as “creepy,” expressing concern that women could be disproportionately affected if publicly shared photos are used to create AI-generated images.

Users with public adult Instagram accounts can opt out without switching their profiles to private. To do so:

    1. Users can open Instagram

    2. Go to Settings

    3. Select Sharing and reuse

    4.  Disable the options under “Allow people to create with and reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta.”

The setting prevents future use of public content for the feature, although it does not remove AI-generated images that were created before the user opted out.
