Spotify’s verification badge to identify artists vs AI

Music streaming platform Spotify has introduced a new verification system for artists, which will draw a clearer line between official accounts and authentic creators as AI-generated music continues to proliferate online.

In a statement, Spotify said the new “Verified by Spotify” badge will appear on artist profiles and in search results, indicating that an account went through additional review and meets the platform’s standards for authenticity.

Unlike earlier verification markers, the new badge is designed to indicate that an artist is a legitimate, real-world entity.

Spotify said it is prioritizing signals of credibility, including sustained listener engagement, compliance with platform policies, and evidence of an artist’s presence beyond the platform, such as live performances or active social media accounts.

Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated music or artificial personas are not eligible for verification at launch.

The rollout of the badges will begin over the coming weeks and will be conducted on a rolling basis, meaning not all artists will immediately receive verification.

Spotify said the absence of a badge does not necessarily indicate inauthenticity, but may reflect that a profile has yet to be reviewed.

The company is also testing additional “artist details” features to provide more context on an artist’s activity, including release history and touring data.
