Popular video game Roblox is rolling out Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts worldwide, giving children different settings based on their age, including access to games, chat features, and safety controls.

The new accounts are meant to help younger users explore Roblox while giving parents more ways to manage what their children can do on the platform.

Roblox Kids accounts are for younger children and come with stricter settings, including chat turned off by default. Roblox Select accounts are for older children and younger teens, giving them access to more features while keeping safety tools and parental controls available.

“As kids grow into teens, controls shift more to them, but parents can stay informed to help guide the decisions their teen is making online,” Roblox said.

“The new accounts offer additional opportunities for parental involvement and oversight, shared experiences, and access to resources for online safety,” said Dr. Anuradha Rao, a member of Roblox’s Global Parent Council. “When combined with active parenting and open communication, these features can help families develop healthy technology habits at home and foster more positive online interactions.”

Roblox said games on the platform go through moderation checks and are given content ratings. Games that appear in Roblox Kids and Roblox Select go through additional reviews to make sure they are suitable for younger users.

Developers also need to complete verification requirements before their games can be included, including ID verification and securing their accounts with two-factor authentication.

Roblox Kids and Select accounts will not have access to Roblox Moments, a feature where users share gameplay clips. Social media links will also only be available to users who have completed an age check and are 16 or older.

What parents can control on Roblox

Parents who link their accounts to their child’s Roblox account can manage several settings, including:

    • Turning in-game chat on or off for children ages 5 to 8. If enabled, chat is limited to text conversations with similar age groups or Trusted Friends.
    • Checking their child’s friend list until the child turns 13.
    • Blocking or reporting users they do not want connected to their child.
    • Approving or declining Trusted Friend requests.
    • Setting screen-time and spending limits until the child turns 13.
    • Changing chat settings and blocking specific games until the child turns 16.
    • Receiving notifications about spending, screen time, and friend lists for teens ages 16 to 18.

Roblox said users who have not completed an age check cannot use chat, regardless of age. Users 16 and older who complete an age check will have access to standard Roblox accounts with more features.

It added that chat safety features, including text filters and monitoring for child exploitation risks, remain active. Where chat is available, users can only communicate with similar age groups or Trusted Friends.
