The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially activated contactless fare payments at MRT-3 stations, allowing commuters to tap their Mastercard credit, debit, or prepaid cards directly at the gates to pay for their rides.

At the moment, the contactless payment option is currently available at four key stations: North Avenue, Cubao, Ayala, and Taft.

The upgrade, which went live on Thursday, July 25,  marks the first full implementation of an open-loop payment system in Metro Manila’s rail network.

Moreover, commuters can skip ticket queues by directly tapping their Mastercard on upgraded gates, with fares automatically deducted, just like using a beep card. Here’s what you need to know:

    How does it work?

Just like a beep card, you tap your Mastercard on the reader at the gate. Your fare is automatically deducted from your bank account or credit limit.

Is this available in all stations?

Not yet. As of now, only North Avenue, Cubao, Ayala, and Taft stations support Mastercard tap payments. More stations may follow after testing.

    Can I use any Mastercard?

It should work with most Mastercard credit and debit cards, including those from major local banks. Just make sure it has contactless (tap) capabilities.

    Will I be charged extra?

According to reports, only the standard fare is deducted. But it’s best to check with your bank for any foreign transaction or service fees, especially if your card is issued abroad.

Can I still use my beep card or QR ticket?

Yes! This system is optional and coexists with existing payment methods.

What if I’m using a phone or smartwatch?

If your Mastercard is linked to a digital wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, tap-to-pay might also work, but expect varying results during the pilot stage.

    Why does this matter?

According to the DOTr, this system aims to reduce queues, modernize fare collection, and offer more flexibility for commuters. The pilot will expand depending on technical performance and commuter feedback.

The same tap-to-pay system is also being tested at select LRT-1 and LRT-2 stations. Keep an eye out for signs at station gates. If you’re unsure, station personnel are available to assist.
