Canva’s New Canvas: Redefining Visual Communication for Enterprises

“Today, enterprises, tomorrow the world!”

That particular thought entered my mind as I had a pleasant morning chat with Robert Kawalsky, Head of Product at Canva, about the new and exciting things they were launching.

In this day and age where visual communication has become a way of life, Canva is making waves with its latest suite of enterprise-focused tools and updates.

At the Canva Create event in Los Angeles last May 24, 2024, Canva unveiled their biggest update in a decade, signaling a huge leap forward in its enterprise strategy.

This new direction aims to simplify and consolidate the fragmented design ecosystem while empowering every employee, from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies, to communicate visually with ease and efficiency.

Canva’s Evolution: From Individual Users to Enterprise Giants

Canva, the popular design platform, has spent over a decade empowering individuals to create stunning designs.

Now, Canva is making a shift to cater to large enterprises with its new Canva Enterprise. This new offering is designed to address the fragmented design processes and the increasing need for visual communication within organizations.

Canva Enterprise is designed to meet the demands of larger organizations with complex security, reporting, administration, and brand management needs. With over 180 million monthly active users (and still growing), Canva’s enterprise solutions promise to redefine workplace productivity and collaboration.

Inspiration Behind the Move to Enterprise

When asked about the inspiration behind Canva’s move to enterprise solutions, Kawalsky shared, “Our mission at Canva has always been to empower everyone to communicate visually. As businesses become more complex, the need for effective visual communication has never been greater. We’ve seen incredible demand from enterprises, and it’s about satisfying that need and bringing the tools we’ve developed over the past decade to the world’s largest organizations.”

Streamlined Tools and Enhanced UI

The new Canva UI, tailored specifically for the workplace, was a major highlight of our discussion.

“We’ve rethought the UI and the user experience from the ground up,” Kawalsky explained. “We’ve upgraded the workflows for collaboration and considered the needs of employees and organizations.”

The redesigned interface is built to enhance creativity and productivity, featuring a new contextual editing toolbar, customizable homepage, and easier navigation for seamless collaboration. These updates are expected to improve workflows, reduce the number of tools needed, and streamline visual communication processes.

Canva Work Kits, another exciting addition, offer industry-curated collections of templates and resources tailored for different functions within an organization, such as marketing, HR, sales, and creative departments. This ensures that teams can efficiently scale their output while maintaining brand consistency.

Innovation with AI and Collaboration Tools

Canva continues to innovate with its Magic Studio AI products, integrating AI capabilities to enhance design and video editing processes.

“What we’re doing with this new feature called Highlights is making video editing incredibly easy,” Robert elaborated. “We’ve taken what was a manual process and really condensed it down into a single click.”

New features like Magic Edit for photo enhancement, AI-powered Highlights for video editing, and voice enhancement tools simplify previously cumbersome tasks, making them accessible with just a few clicks.

Another new feature, Canva Courses transforms training materials into interactive courses, allowing organizations to manage and track employee learning and development effectively. “With Canva Courses, you can transform presentations, videos, or infographics into courses easily,” Kawalsky said.

Commitment to Ethical AI and Creator Compensation

In our conversation, Kawalsky also emphasized Canva’s commitment to ethical AI use and compensating creators.

“We believe that creators should be compensated if their templates and designs are used. It’s about recognizing and rewarding creativity,” Kawalsky stated. The company is deeply invested in trust and safety for AI output, building models to prevent misuse and adhere to community guidelines.

Wrapping It Up

As we wrapped up the interview, it was clear that Canva’s new direction is set to redefine the way we work. With its innovative tools and commitment to empowering users, Canva is about to become an indispensable part of both our professional and personal lives.

In the coming years, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Canva becomes an essential part of our daily routine, not just in work but in every aspect.
