Exoborne review: Tactical extraction meets extreme weather chaos

If you’ve ever thought, “What if The Division had an extraction shooter mode and the weather was out to get me?”—then Exoborne might be your next big obsession.

This upcoming tactical extraction shooter blends intense squad-based gameplay with a gripping narrative, all set against a post-apocalyptic backdrop where Mother Nature is just as deadly as enemy factions.

    Familiar Yet Fresh Gameplay

At first glance, Exoborne immediately gives off The Division vibes with its tactical third-person shooting, cover-based combat, and team-based objectives. However, it quickly establishes its own identity through its dynamic world and high-stakes extraction mechanics. The shooting feels responsive, movement is fluid, and the overall experience is polished—even at this early stage.

One of the standout features is the verticality in movement. Thanks to the exo-rigs equipped with grappling hooks and paragliders, traversal is more engaging than in your typical cover shooter. This system allows for creative repositioning, fast-paced engagements, and even some Just Cause-style environmental chaos.

    Surviving the Elements and Enemies

Exoborne follows the classic extraction shooter formula: drop into a massive open world, complete objectives, gather loot, and get out alive. But there’s a catch—this world doesn’t just contain enemy squads; it also throws unpredictable weather events into the mix. One moment, you’re clearing out a high-value target, and the next, a massive storm rolls in, turning the battlefield into a fight for survival.

Combat is tactical but forgiving, with a longer time-to-kill than in Escape from Tarkov. This gives players time to react, strategize, and use their abilities wisely. Squad play is heavily encouraged, and communication is key to making it out with your loot intact.

While most extraction shooters tend to be light on story, Exoborne bucks the trend with a narrative that’s genuinely intriguing. The game is set in a world ravaged by environmental disasters, where a powerful corporation failed to prevent a climate catastrophe. You play as part of the Reborn, a faction fighting to reclaim what’s left and uncover the truth behind the collapse. This story-driven approach adds an extra layer of motivation beyond just looting and extracting, making you want to explore, dig into the lore, and uncover the secrets of this broken world.

The game world is beautifully detailed, with lush environments that can quickly turn hostile thanks to the dynamic weather system. Tornadoes, lightning storms, and other natural disasters don’t just serve as eye candy—they actively change the way you play. A sudden storm might force you to find cover or alter your extraction plans entirely, adding an exciting layer of unpredictability. The overall aesthetic sits somewhere between realism and sci-fi, with futuristic tech blending into a grounded, post-collapse setting. If you loved the gritty world-building of The Division but wanted something more unpredictable, Exoborne delivers.

    A Promising Future

The playtest gave us a glimpse of what Exoborne could be, and now we’re waiting on the developers to bring that vision to life. The game has already painted a compelling picture, and fans are eager to experience it firsthand.

Exoborne has the potential to shake up the extraction shooter space by mixing high-stakes tactical gameplay with a dynamic and immersive world. The blend of environmental hazards, compelling storytelling, and fluid movement mechanics creates a thrilling experience that stands apart from its competitors. If you’re a fan of games like The Division, Hunt: Showdown, or even Battlefield 2042’s Hazard Zone mode, this is one to keep on your radar.

Set to release on PC and consoles, Exoborne is already available for wishlisting on Steam. With more polish and fine-tuning, it could easily become a standout in the genre. Now, the only question is—are you ready to survive both the firefights and the fury of nature?
