Nubia Music by ZTE is an ultra budget music phone at only P3,999

“Oh it’s a Mondrian!” This was the first thing I blurted out when I saw the Nubia Music unveiled to me at a brunch meeting with ZTE at Wildflour in BGC.

“You’re the only one who said that!” one of the execs exclaimed. On paper, it’s referred to as “Pop Art” design, but for a phone that is only P3,999 I find the pop culture reference towards the Piet Mondrian style of art rather refreshing as it’s something you don’t usually see in these post Y2k times, especially as a phone design. So yes that was neat.

P3,999 lang for a music phone? The Nubia Music comes with a peculiar feature inspired by the Sony Walkman of the 70’s and 80’s. #fyp #zte #nubia #musicphone #Android

The Mondrian design sets the stage for what this phone stands for. It’s a throwback to cultral shifts in art and music — and since we got the art side covered, the music portion deserves some attention. The Nubia Music, despite being a phone that costs less than P4,000 comes with two 3.5mm headphone jacks. This is a big homage to the Sony Walkman of the 1980’s — I remember having one — that sported two jacks so that you could bring your music anywhere AND listen with a friend. It was an odd antithesis to the boombox culture of the 90’s where loud bass ruled and car trunks were sacrificed for speaker systems. This is more nuanced. It’s all about sharing a listening experience with a friend without being annoying in a public bus.

As it has two 3.5mm jacks, I find it odd that it doesn’t come with any. They probably assume you already have a pair (or two) danging from your school bag. Still, an oddity. But at this price point, who can really complain?
