Roblox says local laws will guide its approach to age verification

Roblox says local laws and regulations will guide how it approaches age verification as governments around the world consider stricter measures to protect children online.

Papri Dev, head of Asia-Pacific Communications at Roblox, said the platform works with lawmakers and regulators in individual markets to understand their requirements and adapt to local regulations.

“We ensure that we are very understanding and clear about what the government in a country wants and what the local laws are. And we always follow that as it happens,” Dev said during the Unbox Roblox: An Interactive Media Familiarization Session in Taguig city, held on August 18.

The statement came in response to a question on whether Roblox would support government-backed digital IDs as an age-verification mechanism, including in the Philippines.

She said the company is open to discussions with governments about their requirements for their respective digital environments.

“We definitely believe facial age estimation and mandatory age checks, which are already a part of our platform via facial age estimation, is important,” Dev said, pointing to Roblox’s existing age-verification measures.

Roblox has been strengthening its age-based safety measures as children increasingly use the platform. The company said users who do not complete facial age estimation may still play some games but will not be able to communicate with other users.

The platform has also introduced age-based environments, including Roblox Kids for children aged 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for users aged 9 to 15. Communication features are more restricted for younger users, while parents can link their accounts to monitor their children’s activity.

The approach is particularly relevant in the Philippines, where policymakers are weighing stronger safeguards for children online, including proposals involving age verification and parental controls.

In April 2026, Roblox met with the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to discuss child safety, safeguards, including content moderation, reporting, and parental controls.

The agencies also said Roblox granted the CICC and the Philippine National Police a “green lane” for complaints involving harmful content and encounters with threat actors on the platform.

Roblox’s position leaves room for its age-verification system to evolve depending on the requirements of individual markets.

Dev said Roblox will continue engaging with governments and regulators as countries determine how they want to address safety in their digital environments.
