The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is broadening its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives to create practical solutions that address everyday Filipino needs, from government services to energy efficiency.

The new projects were introduced at the 2025 AI Fest, held from August 11 to 13 at the Iloilo Convention Center.

“By 2028, we envision AI driving inclusive innovation, stronger governance, empowered communities, and globally competitive industries for a sustainable, tech-enabled future,” said DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. in his keynote speech.

Earlier in June, the department announced plans to allocate more than 2.6 billion for AI programs by 2028. Since 2017, it said that it has invested 2.3 billion in 113 AI-related projects already, to strengthen local capacity.

Among the platforms is JuanaKnow, an AI chatbot that provides innovators the information for the development and marketing of their products.

DOST also introduced Talino.AI, a user-friendly digital guide that simplifies navigation across the department’s many programs.

Meanwhile, SmartGrid.AI, developed with Iloilo Science and Technology University and MORE Power, applies AI to energy distribution. The system is said to manage electricity flow more efficiently and reduce waste.

The agency has also partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch the AI Innovation Sandbox, a cloud-based platform giving researchers and developers access to advanced tools for testing and improving AI solutions.

Beyond platforms, DOST is leading the AI-Ready ASEAN Training Program, which aims to equip 5.5 million youth, educators, and parents across Southeast Asia with AI knowledge and skills.

DOST Regional Operations undersecretary Sancho Mabborang stressed the need for local communities’ presence in the growing AI ecosystems worldwide.

“AI is no longer a future concept, it is transforming how we live, work, and prepare for tomorrow’s challenges,” Mabborang said.

Organized by DOST Regional Office 6, Iloilo Business Club Inc., and DevCon, the AI Fest gathered leaders and innovators under the theme “Coding a Better Future: Responsible AI for Cities and Communities.”

The event featured a hackathon, research forum, film showing, and AI exhibits to encourage collaboration among students, startups, experts, and government agencies.
